[va-bird] First Landing SP 4/28:Ovenbird, Baltimore Oriole, Hooded, Black-throated Blues

Howdy all,

Today was going well until the 25+mph winds showed up a little after 9am.
After that it was down hill, and quick. I ended the day banding 16 birds. We
caught our first OVENBIRD of the season, which is funny, because there was one
singing from inside the station for the first time this spring. Maybe the same
bird! As sort of a surprise, I saw a SLATE-COLORED JUNCO on one of my net runs
only to catch it a few net runs later. First one I have seen in the station
area in a few weeks.
I also heard my first BALTIMORE ORIOLE of the season as well today.
Shannon heard quite a few BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS this morning, their
first big push into the park. She also heard a HOODED WARBLER. Those have been
rather low here in the park, which comes as a surprise, with the numbers that
have been reported around the state, especially at the Dismal Swamp.
The forecast is for a lot of wind the next few days, so I am expecting low
numbers, due to low net hours. Only time will tell.

Here's the totals for the day.

Common Yellowthroat 2
Ovenbird 1 only 2 warbler species
Swamp Sparrow 3
Slate-colored Junco 1 seemingly late
White-throated Sparrow 1
Hermit Thrush 4 where are all the other thrushes???
Gray Catbird 3
Northern Cardinal 1
R-T Hummingbird [1] released unbanded

TOTAL------------------------ 16

Cheers,
Jethro Runco
