I stayed home yesterday and our feeders were about as busy as I have
ever seen them. We had 24 species in our yard at variuos times during
the day. Highlights were a single fox sparrow, 12 field sparrows, 4
eastern towhees, 15 red-winged blackbirds, and 1 common grackle. A
young female sharp-shinned hawk created chaos twice, the first time
successfully (from her standpoint). I was afraid for a while that she
snagged the single fox sparrow. To my great relief the fox sparrow
re-appeared.
A mockingbird has been regularly coming to our suet feeder for the last
couple of weeks, which I have taken as a sign that its supply of berries
is pretty much gone. I have been throwing raisins and grapes on the
patio, which the mocker protects with a passion. When a flock of robins
landed in the yard the mocker went nuts keeping them away from its
fruit.
