All,
I did a little birding in Fauquier County today. I first drove along
Leeds Manor Road between Rt. 17 and Thompson WMA where I hear Louisiana
Waterthrush each spring. I was hoping to hear one today but I did not.
I then went to Lake Athlone, a private lake, along Crest Hill Road.
There I was delighted to find a single Long-tailed Duck, with some
Bufflehead and Ring-necked Ducks along with about a dozen Tree Swallows
and one Barn Swallow. From there, I checked on the lake on Belvoir Road
which is about half full of water again. There were two Tree Swallows
and two Barn Swallows there along with some Ring-necked Ducks. The
Harrison Road pond had 500 or so Canada Geese, and a few of each of the
following: Ring-necked Ducks, American Wigeon, Lesser Scaup, Gadwall,
Green-winged Teal, Bufflehead, Killdeer and a single Greater
Yellowlegs. Finally, traveling to the reservoir located on Airlie
(again private property), I found about 10 Common Mergansers, three
Horned Grebes, a flock of approximately 40 Ring-billed Gulls (absent
were the three Bonaparte's that were there yesterday), and the usual
waterfowl as described above. A pretty good haul for the drizzle that
accompanied most of the way. I am anxious for a nice warm spring day so
I can thaw and dry out!
