Greetings,
Sue Heath and I took another shot at the gulls at Fauquier Landfill today.
Diversity was pretty similar to yesterday. The Glaucous Gull was present, and
at closer inspection it appears to be a second winter bird. Four Lesser
Black-backed Gulls were seen, a first-winter, a second-winter, and two
third-winters. There were about fifty Great Black-backed Gulls, several
hundred Herring
Gulls, and a few thousand Ring-billed Gulls.
Later in the day at Lake Manassas there was a Bonaparte's Gull, a bird not
typically found out here in winter. Other birds that have been found during
scouting which sometimes are not seen on the count include Chipping Sparrow,
Northern Shoveler, and Rough-legged Hawk. We're still in need of a couple
skilled
birders to help out on the count this year. Lost a few participants due to
pushing the count back a week, but it beat the snot out of driving around in
five inches of snow and such.
Anyone intersted in counting should contact me.
Cheers,
Todd
