All,
The Black Skimmer reported yesterday by Kurt Gaskill at the Harrison
Road pond in Fauquier County was still there this morning when I checked
about 9:45. When I first arrived it was sitting on the mudflat. I
watched it a while fearing that it was near death but then it took off
and made a few flights around the lake but returned shortly to rest on
the mudflat again. I had contemplated trudging out there to rescue it
but since it can fly, I cannot see any way of catching it. I think that
if it was able, it would have already returned seaward however. As Kurt
reported it is a hatch year bird. Perhaps it is too weak from being
storm blown to attempt a long distance flight. Maybe I am wrong (I hope
I am). At any rate, if anyone has the time, inclination and know how,
this bird is probably a candidate for rescue.
