Boy it sure was windy today, and cold! Species diversity was pretty low
overall, due I am sure to the weather. Greg Beck and I birded the Bridle
Trail area at Sky Meadows for a few hours. Highlights were a pair of
gorgeous LOGGERHEAD SHRIKEs in their usual haunts along the Bridle
trail, a lone RED-HEADED WOODPECKER deep in the woods (a somewhat odd
location for this species), and several First of Year birds for me
(Eastern Wood-Pewee, Swainson's Thrush, and Veery). Grassland birds were
very quiet with only a handful of Meadowlarks and Field Sparrows, no
Grasshopper Sparrows, Bobolinks, etc...
Earlier in the morning we saw a lone Broad-winged Hawk, gobs of Prairie
Warblers, and a Blue Grosbeak that posed for some excellent pictures
(that hopefully I will upload to my blog soon) along Bull Run Post
Office Rd in far western Fairfax County.
For the day 70 species total. Locales visited: Bull Run Post Office Rd
(Fairfax County), Vint Hill/Lake Brittle (Faquier County), Sky Meadows
(Faquier County). Full list posted to my blog: http://www.fairfaxbirding.com
