I birded in my neighborhood for under an hour after
the rain stopped late on Sat. morning. A surprise
SAVANNAH SPARROW was present in the recently (as in
this winter) cut over power line right of way. This
area is now sprouting small weeds less than 1' high.
On one side of the power line cut is a strip of lawn
with townhouses, on the other side is a treeline with
more townhouses, so it's not a place where I'd ever
expect this species. It was feeding on the ground and
calling. Earlier in the week, a first spring
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was present nearby. CHIMNEY
SWIFTS are now seen and heard here daily, I welcome
their presence as I sit on the front steps to read
after work.
