This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, September 26,
at 2:15 pm.
Top birds this week are GREAT WHITE HERON*, FRANKLIN'S GULL and
SABINE'S GULL*, all in MD.
Other birds of interest include BROAD-WINGED HAWK, shorebirds, BLACK
TERN, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, OLIVE-SIDED and
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, thrushes, warblers
including GOLDEN-WINGED, ORANGE-CROWNED, CONNECTICUT and MOURNING,
LARK and LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD.
A GREAT WHITE HERON*, a white morph of the GREAT BLUE HERON, was seen
while kayaking just south of Parker's Creek in Calvert Co, MD on Sept
24. This bird is reviewable in MD as "a subspecies or form unusual to
the region."
A first-summer FRANKLIN'S GULL, first reported last week, was again
found and photographed at the Indiantown Pig Farm, Dorchester Co, MD
on both Sept 23 and 24.
An immature SABINE'S GULL was observed Sept 24 from the observation
platform near the Conowingo Dam on the Harford/Cecil Co line, MD. It
was seen flying about halfway between Rowland Island and the shore.
The BROAD-WING HAWK migration continued this past week with reports
from the various hawk watches, again most notably at the Rockfish Gap
Hawk Watch, VA with almost 3,000 reported on Sept 23.
On Sept 19 a rather early GOLDEN EAGLE was reported from the Rockfish
Gap Hawk Watch.
An immature AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was found at the turf farm on
Morgantown Rd, off Rte 257 in Wayside, Charles Co, MD on Sept 20. It
was relocated on both Sept 23 and 24. Another immature AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVER was found on the mud flats at the mouth of Hunting
Creek, Fairfax Co, VA on Sept 24.
A juvenile WHIMBREL was noted Sept 23 at Great Oak Pond, 2 miles west
of Melitota, Kent Co, MD on Rte 298. Among the many birds seen on the
trip to Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD on September 23 there
were 1 HUDSONIAN GODWIT, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 55 STILT SANDPIPERS, and
2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.
STILT SANDPIPERS, this time 108, were the highlight of a visit to
Paper Mill Flats, Baltimore Co, MD on September 19. A later visit to
the Paper Mill Flats the same day also resulted in a juvenile
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER. Two juvenile BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were
among a number of shorebirds found Sept 26 in the southwest corner of
the middle impoundment at the Craney Island landfill, Portsmouth, VA.
Two BLACK TERNS were seen Sept 23 at Possum Point, Prince William Co,
VA.
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was seen on Ferry Neck, Talbot Co, MD Sept 22.
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were reported from a number of different
locations including their normal haunts with 18 at Sky Meadows, SP,
Fauquier Co, VA on Sept 24, an immature on the Mall, Washington, DC
Sept 21 and another in Rock Creek Park on Sept 20 at Picnic area
17/18, Washington DC.
An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen Sept 20 at Cape Horn Park, Carroll
Co, MD. Another was seen the same day perched on a tall walnut tree
in Rock Creek Park just south of the Beach Dr exit off of Rte 355 in
Montgomery Co, MD.
A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was spotted near the stable in Rock Creek
Park, DC on September 20. Two YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS were seen at
Pennyfield Lock on the C&O Canal NHP in Montgomery Co, MD on September
24. Two were also seen Sept 25 at Weinberg Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD.
PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were reported from a number of locations including
1 on September 20 at Picnic area 17/18, Rock Creek Park. Another was
at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA on Sept 21. The same day one
was seen at Chesapeake Landing near the mouth of Worton Landing in
Kent Co, MD. On Sept 21 there were 3 PHILADELPHIA VIREOS at the
Ridge (picnic area 17/18) in Rock Creek Park. A PHILADELPHIA VIREO
was seen at the maintenance yard, Rock Creek Park on Sept 22.
Thrushes continued to be reported moving through the area with several
reports
of GRAY-CHEEKED as well as VEERYS and SWAINSON'S THRUSHES.
Good warbler numbers continue to be reported from a number of
locations last week. A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was first heard and then
seen at Fort CF Smith Park, Arlington Co, VA on Sept 25. An
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found Sept 25 at Compass Pointe Golf
Course, Anne Arundel Co, MD. There was also an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER
at the Maintenance Yard, Rock Creek Park, on the same day.
A first year CONNECTICUT WARBLER was found in the large field at the
Audubon Naturalist Society's Woodend Sanctuary in Chevy Chase,
Montgomery Co, MD on both Sept 20 and Sept 21 but was not relocated
later. Other CONNECTICUT WARBLER sightings occurred on Sept 20 at the
Maintenance Yard in Rock Creek, at Lake Artemesia near College Park,
Prince George's Co, MD, and in Cromwell Valley Park, Baltimore Co, MD.
On Sept 21 there was a CONNECTICUT WARBLER in the Bayside Campground,
Assateague Island, Worcester Co, MD. On Sept 25 an immature
CONNECTICUT WARBLER was seen in Oak Grove, MD. On Sept 21 there was
an adult female MOURNING WARBLER at Milford Mill Park, Baltimore Co,
MD.
A LARK SPARROW was found near the Bayside Campground of Assateague
Island on Sept 21 on the southeast side of the bridge. It was also
reported on the same day as being between the parking area for the
Life of the Marsh Trail and the point. Another LARK SPARROW was seen
Sept 24 in someone's front yard in Wachapreague, Accomack Co, VA near
the corn field on Church St.
Single LINCOLN'S SPARROWS popped up in a number of different locations
last week including the maintenance yard at Rock Creek Park on Sept 21
and 26, Fort CF Smith Park on Sept 22, and at both Sky Meadows SP and
the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship in northwestern
Loudoun Co, VA on Sept 23.
A BREWER'S BLACKBIRD was reported from Huntley Meadow's Park on Sept
25.
