Subject: Rusty Blackbirds & more, DGWMP, Loudoun
With permission a small group from the Northern Virginia Bird Club visited
the Dulles Greenway Wetlands Mitigation Project (DGWMP) this morning. The
highlights of the walk included three RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, 2 adult BALD EAGLES
checking out the nest they used last year & intimidating the waterfowl on
the Wetlands, and a close-up and personal look at a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK.
The latter sighting was prob. the most int'g part of the walk. As we were
identifying several sparrows and other small birds in a hedgerow that
divides the main part of the wetlands from the drier eastern side one of us
pointed out a distant raptor high in the sky. We all shifted our
binoculars on to this distant raptor debating what it was. Almost
immediately it started to come straight towards us w/its talons
outstretched towards us. The next thing we knew a Sharp-shinned Hawk was
darting around in the bushes right in front of us trying to catch one of
the small birds we had been observing moments before.
