[va-bird] FW: Orange Co. 2/18

(2nd attempt)

I got an early start Saturday morning listening for owls in Wilderness
Military National Park (Civil war battlefields). Off of Hill-Ewell drive I
was walking up a dirt road hooting for Barred Owls, but not hearing a thing.
I walk around tall line of cedar trees and spotted something large in the
middle of a field. It was still fairly dark and I could only make out the
silhouette. At first I thought it might have been a fox, but it turned out
to be a Great-horned Owl. I was very excited to be able to watch it in the
field. It sat there for a few minutes looking around before flying off into
the darkness. I heard another Great-horned hooting in the distance.

Other notable included Horned Larks at the airport, a Hermit Thrush at the
land fill, Purple Finch off of Gum Tree Road, and on Lake of the Woods: 125
Coot, Ruddy Ducks, Redheads, Lesser Scaup, Buffleheads, and Pied-billed
Grebe.

Today on LOW I found Hooded Mergansers and Purple Finch at the feeders. 47
species total.
