Folks participating in the coastal counts this week (especially Back Bay/False
Cape) should keep an eye out for this bird! Mackay Island is in NC just over
the VA-NC line south of False Cape State Park.

Tim Cooper, Refuge Manager at Mackay Island NWR, observed a Northern
Lapwing at the refuge on December 23. The bird has not been relocated
since, despite repeated searches. The bird was photographed and I hope
to have a photo to post on the CBC web site later tonight.
The bird was in a harvested soybean field approximately 400 m
North-Northwest of the refuge office, N36deg 31.746' and W75deg 59.506'.
The bird may have come in with the intense cold front on Dec. 20/21.
High winds(35+mph) the night of 23rd may have pushed bird to another
location.
The refuge gate is open from 7:30 to 4:00 p.m. in the area of the
sighting. There are many cut soybean fields that offer similar habitat
adjacent to the refuge in southern Virginia Beach and on Knotts
Island.
Contact information for Tim is Tim_Cooper@xxxxxxx (252) 429-3100.
