Subject: [NRV Birds] Sandhill Crane!!! Montgomery Cty, VA
Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2006 00:28:10 +0000
Here is an Easter story for everyone:
Michael and I decided to go for a walk around Foxridge Apts. in Blacksburg this
evening around 7:30pm. We were in the far back corner near the "Shrike bush"
and Strouble's Creek. All of a sudden we saw a big bird fly in and heard a
loud call. It flew past us towards the Tech campus, then circled around and
came back. I thought it was a Great Blue, but was confused b/c it's neck was
extended. Michael thought about the call and said it wasn't- it's a Sandhill
Crane- he had them on his study site in Tallahassee at Tall Timbers. So it
landed in a field past the bear pens- near the aquaculture center. We ran
home, got the scope and our bikes, and rode out there. It was in a cow pasture
near the creek at the bottom of the hill (I can give you more specific
directions if you want to see it.) We set up the scope and got a great look!
It was pacing back and forth and calling. It was definately a Sandhill!!!
Now that we are home- we looked it up and realized that there is a Lesser and a
Greater. We think it would be a Lesser as it appeared to be totally brown and
had a relatively short bill (compared to a Great Blue). We would love it if
someone could confirm it though- as we weren't sure which would be more likely
in our area. Let me know if you want more specific directions or company out
there to see it (540-818-3743).
Have a blessed Easter!
