Gerry Hawkins and I went to Leesylvania SP (Pr Wm Co) this morning (arr ca.
0700) looking for a few migrants. There were
a few
with the highlight
being Wilsons Warbler briefly glimpsed. Also Prothonotary, American
Redstarts, the usual Northern Parulas and a Yellow-throated Warbler. We
visited Julie Metz afterwards netting Brown Thrasher, then onto the mouth of
the Occoquan River at the marina (Pr Wm Co side) and found a nice group of 5
Northern Shoveler plus Lesser Scaup out in Belmont Bay and a late-ish Purple
Martin. We briefly visited the Lorton area and notched American Kestrel,
then moved onto Fort Belvoirs Accotink Bay Wildlife Refuge which added
American Black Duck and 25 Blue-winged Teal and finally observing a Yellow
Warbler. We drove on and visited the Mississippi Kite nest site near
Waynewood and found the young nestling that appeared to be getting very
close to fledging. Northward we drove along GW Parkway to the Hunting Creek
mudflats fast by Dyke Marsh and spotted a few shorebirds including Western
Sandpiper. We called it quits at 330pm, hot & tired and returned to our
respective digs. What will tomorrow bring?
