This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, September 19,
at 2:15 pm.
Top bird this week is FRANKLIN'S GULL in MD.
Other birds of interest include TRUMPETER SWAN, BROAD-WINGED HAWK,
SANDHILL CRANE, shorebirds, SANDWICH TERN, COMMON NIGHTHAWK,
CHUCK-WILL'S WIDOW, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, PHILADELPHIA VIREO,
thrushes, warblers including BLUE-WINGED, GOLDEN-WINGED, CONNECTICUT
and MOURNING.
A first-summer FRANKLIN'S GULL was picked out of a flock of 2,000+
LAUGHING GULLS at the Indiantown Pig Farm, Dorchester Co, MD on
September 16.
The TRUMPETER SWAN continues to be seen at Schoolhouse Pond, Upper
Marlboro, Prince George's Co, MD with the most recent report from
September 18.
The BROAD-WING HAWK migration is underway with reports from the
various hawk watches, most notably the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch, VA
which reported a total of 6486 for the month of September as of the
18th.
Two SANDHILL CRANES flew over the Hawk watch at Snicker's Gap, VA on
September 12 - a new species for the hawk watch.
Nine AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER were
spotted in a recently plowed field at the corner of Rte 85 and
Adamstown Road, Frederick Co, MD on September 13. An AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen at the Lucas Turf Farm, Garrett Co, MD on
September 17.
A stop at the Paper Mill Flats, Baltimore Co, MD on September 12
yielded 12 shorebird species including 69 STILT SANDPIPERS along with
single WHITE-RUMPED and BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS. A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was
seen there on September 15 also. On September 17, 64 STILT SANDPIPERS
inhabited the flats. The Kiptopeke Challenge on September 16 located
shorebirds at or near Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA including
BUFF-BREASTED, WHITE-RUMPED and BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS. A trip to
Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD on September 16 encountered 16
species of shorebirds including BUFF-BREASTED and WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS.
Two SANDWICH TERNS were flying at the Assateague Island ORV Zone,
Worcester Co, MD on September 15.
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS continued to be seen throughout the area last week,
many at Tyson's Corner where the nightly counts stayed at fairly
constant 25-45 birds until the weather cleared on September 16.
A CHUCK-WILL'S WIDOW, unimpressed by the traffic, was perched on a
sign at Chincoteague NWR opposite the auditorium on September 16.
A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was seen in Layhill Park, Montgomery Co,
MD on September 12. Another YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was spotted at
Rock Creek Park, DC on September 17. As part of the Kent County Fall
Count, a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was observed at Eastern Neck NWR on
September 17.
A PHILADELPHIA VIREO responded to pishing in a Clarksville, MD parking
lot on September 14. Another PHILADELPHIA VIREO was captured at the
Kiptopeke Banding Station on September 16. On September 17,
PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were seen at Rock Creek Park, DC and Meadowside
Nature Center, Montgomery Co, MD.
Thrushes were reported passing through the area in decent numbers last
week with reports of VEERYS, GRAY-CHEEKED and SWAINSON'S THRUSHES.
Southbound warblers moved through the area in substantial numbers last
week with numerous reports. Lunch break walks on the Patuxent Branch
Trail, Columbia, Howard Co, MD produced a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER on
September 13 and a GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER on September 12. A female
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was present at Rock Creek Park, DC on September
13. Another GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was seen at Middle Patuxent
Environmental Area, Howard Co, on September 16.
A September 17 trip to Rockburn Branch Park, Howard Co, and the
Halethorpe Ponds Baltimore Co, produced a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER and
several CAPE MAY WARBLERS. A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was seen at
Leesylvania State Park, Prince William Co, VA and at Blair's Valley
Lake, Washington Co, MD on September 16. CONNECTICUT WARBLERS were
banded at Kiptopeke State Park, Northampton Co, VA on September 16 and
17. Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, provided a close range view of a
CONNECTICUT WARBLER on September 17. A MOURNING WARBLER put on a good
show from the towpath upstream from Riley's Lock, Montgomery Co, MD on
September 17.
