Subject: Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve (Loudoun Co) Birds Seen Oct. 14, 2006
Thirteen people participated in the bird walk at the Banshee Reeks Nature
Preserve this morning. The Dulles Wetlands Mitigation Project (DGWMP) was
birded from Oatland Mills Rd both before & after the walk. We broke into
two groups, the second led by Ray Smith, for part of the Banshee walk.
The temp. was about 30 at the beginning of the walk but it warmed up into
the 50's later. The DGWMP visits were led by Laura Weidner, Mary Ann Good,
& Scott Baron.
The highlights of the day included American Coots (uncommon on the DGWMP),
5 Wilson's Snipe and 2 Ravens at the DGWMP, a Brown Creeper & 2 Winter
Wrens (one of which, next to the Visitor Center, let us closely observe it
for over 5 minutes), a White-crowned Sparrow. The latter three were
first of season species for most of us.
Don't forget that Banshee is open to the general public next week (the 3rd
weekend of the month) on Saturday & Sunday, Oct. 21 & Oct. 22, from 8 am to
4 pm. There will be a native plant sale at the Preserve on the 21st.

providing access to a lot more of the preserve.
