A cool morning brought out a few souls for a Fairfax Audubon Society trip to
Prince William Forest Park this sunday morning. A lot of action around the
picnic area near the visitor center kept us entertained for a while. E.
Towhee, 2 Brown Thrashers, Juncos, BG Gnatcatcher were about. Hoping for a
Pine Warbler, we headed down the road to the Pine Crossing trail...Our stroll
thru the woods was pretty quiet, a Pileated WP and E. Phoebe was about all we
could muster....straining for an Ovenbird, I think we were about one week too
early.
Hoping for some more action, we headed to Leesylvania State Park - a bit more
activity, but no warblers. Best birds were Chipping Sparrow and the Purple
Martens (4) singing and checking out the Marten house. We watched Tree
Swallows buzz bluebirds in a duel for the nest boxes.
We continued north to Mason Neck where we finally scored warblers. A singing
Yellow-throated Warb. and Yellow rumps were nice to see. Also had 2 No.
Pintails in the swamp along the boardwalk trail and assorted ducks in Belmont
Bay...Ruddies, L. Scaup and Buffleheads.
We tallied 53 species for the day...Rich Rieger
