I was with family yesterday on trip to Highland County for the annual Maple
Festival.  It was a surprisingly sunny day with mild temps, reaching around
50. With threats of having my binoculars confiscated, this was primarily a
family-oriented, non-birding outing.

Both surprise and highlight was an Evening Grosbeak that flew low across the
road and then landing on small tree within clear view.  This was maybe 1/10
to 2/10 of mile just after turning north onto Rt. 220 off of Rt. 250 in
Monterey.  We had just passed what I believe was the last commercial
building on the right hand side and there were residential houses on the
left.  The one grosbeak flew from yard on left side of the road flying to
the right.

Near Blue Grass we observed two Golden Eagle interacting with each other.
These birds remained well into the Virginia side.  One was perched in a tree
at top of far ridge and a second one, a juvenile with the oval white patches
on both the upper side and underside of the wings and white at base of tail,
would circle and swoop down and occasionally land in tree next to the other
one.  What was truly exciting was being able to share this with other family
members, especially my 14 year-old nephew who was able to pan the spotting
scope and watch the one that circled and swooped!
