I can assist with the directions if anyone is thinking about going after this
before Laura gets home to post directions.
Harrison Road is Route 750. To get there take Interstate 66 to exit 31.
Exit 31 is Route 245, and runs north to south. At the bottom of the ramp,
turn left (south) on 245. You will pass under 66, and at about a half-mile
750 will be on the right. Go about a quarter mile, and you will see a pond
on the right (north) in a fenced off pasture. (From Warrenton or south, it
is easy to take US 17 north about six miles past Warrenton, turn right
(north) on 245 (well marked with signs for Great Meadow field events center),
follow a little over a mile to you see 750 (Harrison) on the left.)
The pond is a fair distance across the pasture, so you'll need a scope to get
good looks at anything out there. This is the same pond that has had Greater
White-fronted Geese on it for the past couple winters. The field just east
of the pond can be good for pipits in fall and bobolink in spring. Savannah
sparrows can also be found along Harrison Road in winter. All of the area
surrounding Harrison Road is private property. If that wasn't enough reason
to not trespass, the many of the cows in the pasture with the lake are
longhorns.
At the western end of Harrison is the intersection with Route 709, Belvoir
Road. If you head left (south) on this road, there is another pond to the
east across a pasture. That pond can also be productive for things like
Canvasback, teal, Hooded Mergansers, and has even had a scoter in it some
years back.
Best,
Todd
