Hi all
Sorry for the late post my computer decided it would take a few days off
While I was gone. My Daughter in Law got it almost back this afternoon.
Prompted by reports about 3 Swallow-tailed Kites & 5-8 Mississippi Kites
My Wife and I decided to take a trip to Eastern Shore. (5-25 to 5-27 05 )
We started out at Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR. around 7:30 am with no sight
of Kites. We did see however two Bobwhites and you could here them calling all
around. we saw and heard them calling all the way to Chincoteague an back. It
has been many years since hearing and seen them in so many differenced places.
We had a few warblers including a nice Tennessee and a Chat. there was one
Gadwall and many Peeps at ramp road pond. We made our way up to the north
Hampton Co. land fill with many stops along the way at 600 & down Magothy
RD. 2-Eurasian-Collar Doves and 12-Cedar Waxwings and 2-Redhead woodpecker and
6- Whimbrels. In the fields along way many Dunlin and Peeps along with a few
Horned larks. As lunch time was drawing near it was back to Sting Rays for
lunch. after several more hours searching for Dickcissel and kites with no
luck it was of to Willis Wharf to catch low tide where we had clapper rails
Marble Godwits, Willets, Whimbrels, and other expected species. we spent two
night and a day at We spent two nights and a full day. at Chincoteague
Highlight 2-red knot's, 2-Buff Breasted Sandpiper, Whip-poor Will, Chuck-Will's
Widow and Screech Owl. and Va. Rail we also had northern Gannets out over the
Ocean. Leaving Chincoteague early Friday morning we searched from Oyster south
on Rt. 600 seeing very little on Magothy we found a few warblers. I through I
had found a Kite but when it banked around it was a Night Hawk.
The highlight of the trip was at Ramp Rd. When a Black Rail Run across the
road and then ran Back.
We stooped at the CBBT Islands I was surprised to see purple sandpiper still
hanging around
In all we Had 129 species for the trip I guess I need to go look for kites more
often
The bad news was I was told at CBBT office That May 31 would be the last day
for birders on the Island unless there was a 11 hour decision.
