Kurt Gaskill, Kim Peacock and I birded Cockpit Pt. Rd. and Leesylvania SP this
morning, from 6 to noon. While not in Fairfax, these are locations Ben was
looking for information on. Early on there were lots of birds along Cockpit
Pt. Rd., but not as much diversity as I would have expected. Still, we had 20
species of warbler (tons of yellow-rumped, and good numbers of worm-eating and
parula), lots of rose-breasted grosbeaks (I think we came up with 9), a literal
flock of 11 kingbirds landing in the treetops, both orioles, both tanagers,
Swainson's thrush, acadian flycatcher, yellow-billed cuckoo, barred owl, and
least sandpiper at the ash pond. After things had quieted down, we moved on to
Leesylvania at about 10. We added a few species, including our 21st warbler
(blackburnian) and pewee. We had a great view of a male and female summer
tanager bathing in a puddle with a male cardinal. Red, anyone?
