I did not find any red-necked grebes around Leesylvania SP and Occoquan
NWR this past weekend, but I had some notable sightings nonetheless.
Occoquan NWR held a merlin, Cooper's hawk, osprey, snipe, 7 sparrow
species (song, field, tree, savannah, swamp, white-throated, junco),
brown thrasher, Bonaparte's gull, American pipit, and lots of waterfowl,
particularly red-breasted mergansers (others included horned grebe,
tundra swan, Canada goose, wood duck, gadwall, black duck, mallard,
bufflehead, goldeneye, both scaup, ring-necked duck, ruddy duck, and the
other two mergansers).
On my way to Leesylvania Sunday morning a wild turkey flew across
Cardinal Drive. Best bird in the park was a singing pine warbler. Of
note is the fact that all the two oprey nests easily seen from the
parking lots are gone. I assume they were destroyed by weather, but the
one at the end of the breakwater seemed pretty sturdy, and has been
there ever since the park opened.
Neabsco creek had its usually collection of green-winged teal, plus
pied-billed grebe, and common and hooded mergansers. The bald eagle
nest opposite the pull-off is again active, with the adult easily seen
sitting on the nest.
