Birders,
This morning at Lake Anna Marina, Rt. 208, Rosemarie and I observed an
adult Bald Eagle trying to catch a Pied-billed Grebe. Two PB-Grebes
were in an area of open water about 20 feet wide in the mostly frozen
lake. The eagle spent about ten minutes trying to catch a grebe,
attacking the grebes about every thirty seconds. Just in the nick of
time, the grebes would submerge. Interesting to watch the eagle
maneuver, almost like a kite and keep trying for the catch. Once it
glided in at ice level at high speed, again the prey ducked underwater,
the eagle continued on to a pine tree for a rest.
Also, seen at Lake Anna: Horned Grebe (2), Coots (12), Hooded
Mergansers (10), Buffleheads (2), Ring-billed, Herring and G.
Black-backed Gulls.
Earlier, at Lake Orange there was a huge flock of Canada Geese (2000+),
Pied-billed Grebe (2), Common Merganser (1), Greater Scaup (1),
Ring-billed Gulls (200).
Grasty Road- Rt. 649: Flock of about 1,000 black birds, mostly Common
Grackles. We were able to pick out two Brewer's and three Rusty
Blackbirds. Few Starlings were in the flock. White-crowned Sparrows
(12).
Yard: Purple Finches (4).
Happy birding,
