I led the Dyke Marsh walk this morning, and 16 attendees enjoyed some winter
lingerers and a very few migrants. Highlights were horned grebe (1 off the
picnic area, 1 in the marina, and 1 off the boardwalk), pied-billed grebe (3 in
the marina and 1 off the boardwalk), red-breasted merganser (4 in the cove near
the dogleg), white-crowned sparrow (3 immatures near the bridge after the
dogleg), brown creeper (2 at the start of the trail), and winter wren (1 along
the trail). We saw 49 species in all (list below).
On my way to Dyke this morning I stopped at the overlook along the George
Washington Parkway near Waynewood Blvd. to look for the red-headed woodpecker
Bill McGovern mentioned yesterday. Sure enough, shortly after entering the
woods I heard tapping and found the red-headed in a dead tree.
