Well - the Dyke Marsh walk this morning was easy. Of the seven walkers, the
F's were Mary (except for Jeno) and the M's were Jerry - I think making the
walks name specific would make it a lot easier on the leaders (specially me) as
the gray matter starts to fade - isn't it enough that we're supposed to know
all the bird names! Geez...
A nice breeze and sunny skies made for a pleasant morning stroll. Bird
activity was slim as we all anxiously await the next cold front but a few nice
birds
did manifest for us. We had two imm. Bald Eagles over the water to start the
walk. Two Prothonotary Warblers were foraging in the bushes near the marina
restrooms. One was in no particular hurry and gave us great looks. Baltimore
Orioles worked higher in the trees in that same area. It was a bit warm
already,
heading down the Haul Rd. - mostly Cards and Cats, but we did spy two hummers
working the Jewelweed. Turning the dogleg, we had one Sharp-shinned hawk
posted up in a snag - took off when it saw us - a bit further along, two Yellow
Warblers (M&F) were foraging - as we watched them, a Common Yellowthroat popped
up from the cattails...The Friends of Dyke Marsh (www.fodm.org) sponsor the
weekly Sunday walk starting at 8am. Dyke Marsh is approx. one mile south of
Alexandria along the scenic GW Parkway.You will meet us in the south (first)
