[va-bird] Dyke Marsh Walk, 23 July 2006 - Least Tern

VA-Birders,

Five of us enjoyed the weekly Dyke Marsh bird walk, and were pleased to get a
respite from the recent hot weather with today's temps not exceeding the
mid-seventies.

Top birds were a LEAST TERN observed flying south off the boardwalk area, and
two LEAST BITTERNS (one heard, one seen flying across the open water), a couple
of FORSTER'S TERNS in the same area, and a displaying MARSH WREN at the nest
near the footbridge on Haul Road.

I was not able to scen the mudflats after the walk (high tide was before the
walk), so there were likely more Larids and possibly some shorebirds in
addition to the SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and KILLDER seen off the boardwalk.

Several juvenile birds were observed today, including BROWN THRASHER, GRAY
CATBIRD, and YELLOW WARBLERS among others.

The Dyke Marsh weekly walk is open to all and starts at 8 AM in the main
parking lot of the picnic area. Information about the walk and Dyke Marsh can
be found at www.fodm.org. The day's list of 60 species is below.
