VA BIRDers,
My visit to Dyke Marsh this morning (about 2 hrs) was a very pleasant way to
start out the new month. I visited the picnic area and walked Haul Road. I
returned near dusk for about an hour to fill in some details, esp. with the
shorebirds as the tide was high in the morning, near the Stone Bridge and at
the marina. Best bird of the day was a Grasshopper Sparrow in the picnic
area - a species for which I have no records of occuring at Dyke in the last
15 or 20 years. Other highlights were Tundra Swan (present for a few weeks
now), Northern Shoveler (very rare), Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Northern
Harrier (a male which I find unusual after March), Lesser Black-backed Gull
(adult), Marsh Wren, Cedar Waxwings (finally!), Magnolia Warbler (a decent
showing of warblers for this location today), Lincoln's Sparrow, and Swamp
Sparrow.
