[va-bird] Dyke Marsh 4/27

Well, 10 early birds managed to slip in under the (starter's) gun for the
Sunday morning Dyke Marsh walk. The Great Parkway Classic meant we had the
Haul Rd. largely to ourselves for a change...no loose dogs!

We had a five warbler day with mostly Yellow-rumps, followed by N. Parula, C.
Yellowthroat, Yellow and Palm. Nice bird for the morning was a Black-crowned
Night Heron perched in a tree about 50 yards down the Haul Rd. Not a common
bird for the marsh, they did breed there at one time. The Tundra Swan
continues to be seen in the bay. Blue Jays put on a show today as quite a few
loose flocks pushed thru. Both M and F Orchard Orioles were present today -
no BO's yet. White-eye and Red-eye Vireos along the trail also. A female RW
Blackbird was building a nest about 8 feet off the boardwalk, just past the
first platform and two D woodpeckers were coming and going from a new cavity
along the trail...we had a report of a Hummer at a lilac bush in the picnic
area but could not relocate it and Mary Carol Potter added Field, Savannah
sparrow and a Kingbird to our list. A trip up to the stone bridge after the
walk added a bunch more Caspian terns...NO SHOREBIRDS _ shucks! After the
stone bridge I went out to Monticello Park and saw one of them Scarlet
Tangerines - my first of the year...Rich Rieger
