Just talked to Dana Derks, NPS supervisor for the Dyke Marsh Preserve. A
cleanup has not yet been scheduled for Haul Rd. due to the fact that many
areas
have been hard hit and places w. more visitor traffic are getting priority.
Despite the fact that areas are closed off due to dangerous conditions - many
trees are still "hanging" - visitors are ignoring the barricades to gain
access.
NPS is working to clear these areas. It is possible that NPS will know within
a week a timetable for Dyke Marsh. Dana indicated to me that the park service
counted 55 pieces of the boardwalk during the Dyke assessment. With the ground
still very wet, the danger of more trees coming down is very real. Let's hope
for favorable conditions that will enable the NPS to clear the trail soon.
Meanwhile, a general cleanup day has been scheduled for Oct. 18 from 9am -
noon. I believe this is a Potomac River event. There are close to a billion
plastic bottles along the bike trail and in the Belle Haven picnic area, so
anyone
able and willing to help in the cleanup could mark that day on their
calendars...that's all I know...Rich Rieger
