[va-bird] Dyke Marsh

Eight of us constituted the Friends of Dyke Marsh birdwalk this morning (8-11 
am). Key species were Least Bittern, Warbling Vireo and both Orioles. 
Unexpected were singing Indigo Buntings. Big misses were Marsh Wren (though 
one was heard by Larry Cartwright earlier in the day) and Bald Eagle.

Least Bittern             one seen flying over open water, in front of the 
marsh facing the
                               end of the boardwalk towards the island to its 
right.
Great Blue Heron      at least 15
Great Egret              2
Green Heron            1

Canada Goose         lots
Mallard                    a few, with young
Ring-necked Duck    'Firestone' was in its usual place
Turkey Vulture          1
Osprey                    at least 10

Rock Dove               12
Mourning Dove         4
Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1 heard along Haul Road
Chimney Swift          at least 4
Red-bellied W/P       1

Downy Woodpecker  6, including fledgling
Hairy Woodpecker    1
Great Crested F/C    1
Eastern Kingbird       1 pair, in picnic area, none seen or heard at end of 
boardwalk
Purple Martin           at least 10

Tree Swallow            only 1
Barn Swallow           lots
Blue Jay                  2
American Crow         1 heard, several other 'crows' seen
Carolina Chickadee   6

Tufted Titmouse        4
Wh-br Nuthatch        1
Carolina Wren          8
BG Gnatcatcher       1
American Robin        6

Gray Catbird            1
N. Mockingbird         2
European Starling     lots
Warbling Warbler      1 bird seen (telescope) on nest, feeding young. This 
appeared
                               to be the northern of the two known nests.
Red-eyed Vireo        2

Northern Parula        2 singing males
Yellow Warbler         2 singing males
C. Yellowthroat         2 males
N. Cardinal               12
Indigo Bunting          at least 2, probably 3, singing birds, all along Haul 
Road. 2 of
                               these were seen and clearly different -- one 
full blue, the other 
                               with lots of 'white' below.

Orchard Oriole          several birds, including at least one adult male, 
female and
                               immature male, all in picnic area
Baltimore Oriole        one group (at least one adult male and female) in 
picnic area;
                               similarly along Haul Road
