I found a nice variety of ducks in Powell's Creek in Leesylvania State
Park yesterday (12/1). The tide was low and the ducks were concentrated
in the narrow channel. Species seen included Canada goose (60), black
duck (100), mallard (50), pintail (20), green-winged teal (15), northern
shoveller (8), and American wigeon (2). At the mouth of the creek were
rafts of lesser scaup and ruddy duck. Hopefully, these birds will stick
around for the waterfowl survey next weekend. Also noted on Powell's
Creek and nearby Neabsco Creek were several hundred laughing gulls.
