[va-bird] Dowitchers at Hunting Creek, Fairfax Co.

Va-Birders,

Alerted to a possible new seasonal arrival at Hunting Creek by Harry
Gurkin, I went to see what might be on the scene there at about noon
today. In addition to Killdeer, both yellowlegs, Semipalmated and Least
Sandpipers, I saw two lovely Short-billed Dowitchers actively feeding
near the area under construction for the new Rt. 1 interchange with the
Beltway. The birds were still in breeding plumage, showing a lot of red
on the underparts. I expect they will be stopping at Cameron Run
shortly before high tide, as they have done in previous years. Much
closer views are possible there, although they seem to use this
location for R & R, and so are often sleeping.
