I've had problems with tripods and monopods as carry ons. TSA considers
these as "club type weapons". When last I tried, I had to leave my $30
tripod behind. I'm just glad I was carrying my much more expensive
monopod in my checked luggage. I think you'll be fine with the scope as
a carry on. I've never had any problems with large telephoto lenses for
my camera or multiple sets of binoculars.
My advice is to check your tripod, but carry your scope. If you wrap
your tripod in cloths it should be safe. You might also consider
picking up a Walmart special $20 or $30 tripod when you get there.

I apologize for being slightly off topic, but, for me, this approaches
the CBBT problem.
Next week, I plan to fly to southeast Arizona, and I would like
to take along my scope and tripod as carry-on luggage; however, I've
heard that even people with canes have problems getting on planes.
Is there a TSA policy on tripods? Has anyone had any experience
carrying on a tripod? Should I pack my expensive (for me!) tripod in
my luggage and risk losing it?
Thanks,
Bill
