[va-bird] Difficult Run, Oakton, Fairfax Co

(Sorry for the late post.  I was out with
students all day yesterday looking for herps and
endangered tiger beetles in Calvert Co MD so I
couldn't post until today.)

Sunday 8/31 Difficult Run Stream Valley Park
7:15-9:15 AM  Oakton VA, off of Samaga Rd.
woods, thickety area that used to be beaver pond

BOLD = birds of particular interest to me.

1 great blue heron
1 barred owl
1 turkey vulture
1 cooper's hawk
1 OSPREY (unusual here)
2 red-shouldered hawk
7 ruby-throated hummingbirds (HIGH for here)
5 chimney swifts
7 mourning doves

woodpeckers: 1 pileated, 2 downy, 1 hairy, 3
red-bellied, 7 flicker and 1 RED-HEADED (juv.)
only the second time I have seen one here in 13
years.

3 wb nuthatch
1 phoebe
2 Empidonax sp (in willow and alder thickets)
1 wood pewee
1 yb cuckoo
1 house wren
9 carolina wren
blue jays, common crows,
75 grackles and 15 redwings flying over to S
2 baltimore orioles
40 robins
4 bluebirds
2 wood thrushes
12 catbirds, 2 mockingbirds, 2 brown thrashers

vireos: 6 red-eyed, 7 white-eyed

warblers: 3 redstart, 1 magnolia, 1 kentucky, 4
yellowthroat, 1 BLUE-WINGED (first ever here), 1
black-throated blue

6 chickadees, 5 titmice (SEEMS LOW)

2 blue-gray gnatcatcher

22 cardinals mainly eating mile-a-minute berries;
this weed covered less than .5 acre 7 years ago;
now it covers many acres.

8 goldfinch
9 indigo bunting (HIGH number)
3 BOBOLINKS flying over

NO SPARROWS in what is a winter sparrow haven
despite much pishing and squeaking

Next weekend we plan to start banding here again.
