Adam D'Onofrio and I participated in the Northhampton Co IMBD in the morning
May 14 and spent the afternoon and the morning of May 15 birding Chincoteague.
Best birds Saturday morning were 3 singing DICKCISSEL. Two were on the north
side of Butler Bluff Rd which is off of Arlington Rd (Rt 645) about 0.5 miles
north of Kiptopeke State Park. The birds were about 0.2 miles west of the
intersection of Butler Bluff and Arlington. The third bird was on the north
side of Sandhill Rd about mid-way between Arlington Rd and the shore. This
bird was singing fron atop a small cedar just before a large beige colored
house.
Not much to speak of from Chincoteague. We had a BLACK-NECKED STILT on the
north side of the causeway (Rt 175) just before crossing the last bridge over
to Chincoteague Island. A LEAST FLYCATCHER was calling along the Woodland
Trail at Chincoteague NWR and a single PIPING PLOVER was on the nest inside the
enclosure just south of the last beach parking lot. Lots of WHIMBREL on the
beach and around Tom's Cove. A KING RAIL was heard calling (tick-tick McGrear
call) and seen well on the south side of the causeway (RT 175) just before
reaching Wallop's Island.
We visited Saxis Marsh on Saturday night and came away with a few VIRGINIA RAIL
but alas no Blacks.
On the way home Sunday (May 15) we stopped at the ESVNWR and found another
BLACK-NECKED STILT feeding at the pond on Ramp Rd. CBBT produced little but a
RED KNOT on the rocks off island #2 was a nice find.
Good Birding,
