I have witnessed a cat remove one nestling Cardinal from a nest, take it to the
ground and play with it. I attempted to rescue the bird, but it was fatally
injured with a wound to its head. Hence my thought that it might have been a
cat.
Incidentally, I caught the cat and took it to the SPCA. The other two
nestlings successfully fledged.

Phil,
My quess is that a Blue Jay killed your nestling or less likely for this time
of year, grackles could have done it.. Mammals would probably destroy the whole
nest.
