VA-Birders,
I made a brief stop this AM to Daingerfield Island in Alexandria once again -
I just can't get enough! I received a couple of replies to my post about the
hummingbird that it did not sound like a Ruby-throated based on my description
of the calls. Anna's and Broad-tailed were suggested. I found some recordings
of the male territorial call of the Anna's, and I must say, it sounds quite
close to what I heard yesterday. I remember the calls being grouped in rapid
series of 3 and occasionally 4, which I don't know if it is diagnostic in any
way for Anna's vs. other species. Anyone? I will not expect to be 100% sure
of the ID of this bird, but it is interesting! Keep those feeders out...
Other birds of interest there today was one active western PALM WARBLER, a
flock of 28 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and a fly-over hen NORTHERN PINTAIL.
There was a GREAT EGRET at nearby Roaches Run yesterday 11/1, which is
directly across the GW Parkway from National Airport and technically part of
Arlington.
