I saw the Rufous hummingbird in the Ripley garden today shortly after 1:00
p.m. for about two minutes.  She was perched at the top of the tall
Viburnum which is back against the wall of the building.  I had my camera
this time, intending to get some shots, but this did not afford the best
angle.  She disappeared as Jim Felley approached to show his boss the
setup.  In the manner of all living things you wish to point out to
someone, the Rufous did not appear again, except for an extremely brief
moment at 1:50.  I spent about 15 minutes over in the Haupt garden, but I
did not the Rufous there either.  I did, however, see the Ovenbird in the
Ripley garden three times!  The second of these three times, it paused just
long enough for me to focus and be certain of its identity.  The third
time, it flew in front of me from the island bed to the area under the
Viburnum.  I finally remembered my camera; bringing it up to focus caused
the Ovenbird to dematerialize in some magical fashion.  One must admire
those who make a living photographing moving targets; it requires much
patience!

BTW, word about the hummer has finally spread throughout the A&I building
thanks to an article Jim Felley wrote for their internal newsletter.  By
the time I left around 2:00, there was quite a little gathering of folks in
the corner office: I was starting to feel like a fish in a fishbowl!  But
they have an enviable viewing post for days less pleasant than today.

A final note: an article about our Black-chinned and Rufous friends is
slated to appear in the Washington Post, probably tomorrow in the Metro
section.  I will send out another alert once it actually appears.
