Hello Birders,
The hummingbird that has been seen in the vicinity of the Mall was seen at
least twice again this midday. I sat on a brick wall in the cold, windy,
shady area of the Ripley Garden where I had spotted it twice before;
finally, between about 1:00 and 1:08, it returned. It first appeared near
the middle patch of blue Salvia, but then quickly moved to the patch of
identical blue Salvia on the far right of the bed (almost directly across
from the Japanese Maple). It nectared there for several minutes, and did
not seem too concerned by my presence. I stupidly did not bring binocs or
camera today, so all observations were naked-eye. The back appears very
green, but I think I may have seen a small amount of buff/rufous coloring
on the side near the underwing area. I also saw again what appears to be a
dark line extending from under the eye. It did a lot of tail-flicking as
it nectared, and when it first appeared, its squeaking vocalizations were
audible even over the roar of a nearby generator. It was a cold wait, but
I met some nice birders and got another decent view of the hummer. I'm
definitely bringing my "paraphernalia" tomorrow....!
