[va-bird] Re: Crossbills, Sora, Turkey

All,

I observed a single male Red Crossbill for several minutes this morning
around 11:30ish in Western Rockingham County on the road that leads to
Reddish Knob and Flagpole Knob exactly 1.3 miles from where the turnoffs for
Flagpole and Reddish knob are. There is a pull off there and a short semi
circle turn around suitable for 4 wheel drive or trucks.

Discription- bird was dull reddish brown on breast and belly, undertail
area brownish greyish, cap was reddish brown, bill was dark and crossed,
Side of face was lighter brown than cap or wings. Wings were solid brown.
Tail appeared short and indented and brown/grey in color.

The bird sat perched for several minutes and I was able to get nice looks
including being able to see the bill clearly which is rare for me with
Crossbills. Bird did not vocalize or move about much. It flew in while I
pishing for Warblers, checked things out and then left.

Also seen today were 2 Sora's along Nazarene Church road at the Wetlands
area shortly after passing the Trout farm. Soras were heard -Whinneying
repeatedly and for some reason flushed and I was able to view them shortly
before they landed back in the grassey wetlands.

A nice variety of Warblers and Shorebirds also were seen see list below:
