After spending the past weekend in Chincoteague and spending a good amount =
of time looking over the thousands of Snow Geese for a Ross's that I never =
found, David Clark's post on the two at Craney Island was too good to be =
true. How easy could it be to drive over to Craney and not have to scan =
through thousands of Snow Geese.
A little harder than I thought. After driving 20 miles through a torrential=
rain storm, it slacked up a little once I arrived at Craney. I went =
directly to the sight David described and found the Canada Geese in the =
tall weeds just south of the North cross dike. With rain drops and =
mosquitos bouncing off the windows of my van I spent the next hour playing =
hide and seek with the two Ross's in the tall weeds.Finaly the wind picked =
up and blew MOST of the mosquitos away, the rain settled down to a =
manageable pace and I was able to roll down my windows and use my scope =
and not look through the rain splattered fogged up windows of the van. The =
geese finally came out of the tall weeds and I was able to ID them for =
sure and enjoy a life bird. Never having to get out of the car and into =
the mud and water. As I was getting ready to leave I saw a red fox walking =
right up the road toward my van. He walked right past the van on the =
passenger side and I decided to try to get a picture of him. I crawled =
over to the passenger seat side rolled down the window and whistled at him =
to see if he would turn around. He stopped turned around and walked back =
towards me to about 15 feet. Nice picture, but it made me think that if he =
was this tame was someone feeding him or did he have rabies or was he just =
this curious?
All in all well worth taking off work early and fighting the elements.=20
