Bev Leeuwenberg and I, with David Hughes much-appreciated help, birded Craney
this morning from about 8-10:30. highlights included 3 Avocets and 1 Upland
Sandpiper. Ducks are beginning to return and we noted numbers of Shovelers,
Ruddies, and Green-winged Teal. Numbers of Dunlin are also beginning to build,
and we had two small flocks of Pectoral Sandpipers. On a windy day raptors were
few, but we saw 1 Osprey and 1 Peregrine Falcon.
From there we stopped at the huge nest of Monk Parakeets in Newport News, and
found 8 of them - such a good-looking bird.
Our last stop was at Turkey Island Rd., next to Curles Neck E. of Richmond,
where we, and several others, tried unsucessfully to relocate the Yellow-headed
blackbird reported yesterday. We did find a large flock of mostly
Brown-headed Cowbirds, with a few other "black" birds, but no Yellow-headed.
