I stopped by Craney Island in Portsmouth, Va. this morning to see if
anything interesting had shown up. Security at Craney has recently been
improved. Access is no longer permitted via the Hedge Row Lane gate. To
enter, you must go down to the Rivershore Road entrance where you will
encounter a closed electronic gate. To gain entry, you need to press the
button on the speaker box on the left and identify yourself to the attendant
who will then open up the gate (unless, I suppose, you sound a little too
suspicious).
The interior of all of the impoundments were frozen solid and held few
birds. Large patches of ice were also built up along the banks of the James
River, but there were lots of waterfowl here including Mallard, Black Duck,
American Widgeon, Red-breasted Merganser, Bufflehead (nearly 100),
Canvasback(500+), Ruddy Duck(500+), Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Gadwall,
and Greater Scaup. A large group of about 200 Horned Grebes was out on the
river as well. Raptors seen include American Kestrel, Red-tailed Hawk and
Northern Harrier. Not too many land birds, but did see a Horned Lark and
one American Pipit. No Snow Buntings or Longspurs.
Good birding,
David Clark
