for Bev Leeuwenberg and myself. When we got to Craney we discovered, to our
dismay, it will be closed to all visitors at least for the rest of the week
and maybe longer. Not clear why. The lesson painfully learned is to call
before going to make sure they're open - plus, if anyone in tidewater who
knows of a closing, please, please post to the Listserve. So, we
back-trackedtowards Richmond and stopped at Shirley Plantation on Rt. 5 in
the hope of finding shorebirds. Unfortunately the big puddle-pond is almost
all dried up and there was nothing there. Plus, we went to last year's
Dickcissel spot and heard only a Chat. Small redemption: Yellow-crowned
Night-herons are back on the creek off of Powhatan Pkwy. in Newport News and
Cliff Swallows are back at Jordan Point Marina, off of Rt.156 near Hopewell.
