I misidentified a Carolina Wren as a Red-breasted Nuthatch, as someone
pointed out to me. I didn't pay enough attention to the shape of the bill
when I looked up the Nuthatch in my Sibley's.
Also, I've had a couple of people point out to me that the new Merlin
pictures are really of an Accipiter, although the with different
suggestions as to which one--Cooper's, Sharp-shinned. I relied on someone
else's identification, plus the fact that I expected it to be a Merlin.
Quite frankly, I still think it looks like one of Sibley's depictions of
the Merlin, but I certainly can see that it also looks like a
Cooper's/Sharpie.
I'll change the ID to Carolina Wren, but I'm just going to list Accipiter
for the others until I am certain what it is. Would a close-up of its
bill aid others in determining the species?
Sorry for misleading people,
Cliff Otto
