VA Birders,
About noon today an adult Cooper's Hawk made a pass through our yard past the
bird feeders, then circled over the trees to gain altitude before gliding away
toward the south. The slate blue back with the white terminal tail band was
evident in the bright sunlight. The long rounded tail and the large flat head
were easily seen against the blue sky with binoculars. It was indeed a "flying
cross" as Cooper's have been described. This was a much different bird from the
very small Sharp-shinned I saw the other day, that was struggling to stay
airborne while carrying a chipmunk.
