I just faxed my letters to the CBBT. Since this order has come from =
Homeland Security, I think it makes sense for Virginians to petition =
their member of congress. This is bread and butter economic stuff =
locally, and it would surely be of interest. Faxes with a copy being =
sent to Email will cover the bases here. Below are the first two =
congressional districts near the bridge, but don't be shy, contact your =
member of congress about this issue where you live! Don't forget to =
contact your Senators as well. All info is below. Write the same =
letter to each of them and fax away. Cut and paste in your word =
processor is very helpful in this instance.

This Congressman also has a great record of voting for protecting the =
environment - so we'll have a sympathetic ear.

Send your letters to her new staff and show her how grassroots issues =

Subject: [va-bird] Re: More birding terrorists
I conduct a birding tour of eastern North Carolina every May (for a =
week) for=20
a large tour company. In 2004, for the first time, we were detained by =
not=20
one, not two, but THREE sets of law enforcement officials (a deputy and =
a=20
sheriff from Beaufort County; and a state man) ON A SINGLE MORNING while =
they=20
checked our licenses and our "story" that we were birding. People had =
paid quite a=20
fee to come visit the state and were handled without much consideration =
in=20
two of the three cases. I don't want to harp on this topic (risking =
running off=20
topic for this listserve), but why on earth would police target small =
groups=20
of retirees in this fashion? It's not only counterproductive and a =
waste of=20
taxpayer money: it is downright goon-like and not what I've come to =
expect as a=20
citizen of this country in my ~40 years here. We should identify =
instances=20
of birder harassment to our Congressmen and other elected officials =
every time=20
they occur.
