Took a couple of my more ambitious ornithology students out Saturday morning
(4/4) before the rain front came through about 9:30 AM. Our lab times out
in the field are in the afternoons, so I wanted to try and expose them to
the more active dawn chorus. Went down along the James River near town.
Besides several gnatcatchers, our best bird was a relatively early Common
Yellowthroat heard singing and calling, though we never could get a look at
it. It was in appropriate habitat and acting like a typical shy
yellowthroat, however, so I don't think it was a mockingbird ;) The early
date for our area is 3/28.
