[va-bird] Common Mergansers at Roaches Run, Arlington

VA Birders,

After listening to the wretched weather reports this morning (snow is
definitely a 4-letter word!), I decided I had to get out for at least a
little while today. So I headed down the Potomac River this afternoon to see
if I could find either of the 2 species of wintering ducks that I had not yet
seen this year. Fortunately, I decided to stop at Roaches Run to see if any
more birds had arrived there, and I spotted 2 female Common Mergansers (1 of
my quest birds). I also spotted Erika Wilson, who had stopped there to see
if the Osprey we reported there a couple of days ago was there.
Unfortunately, it was not. Erika was on her way to Belle Haven Park, in
Alexandria, where I also planned to go. We went to the boat launch area,
where we found more Common Mergansers as well as a male Red-breasted
Merganser (my first in Northern VA this year), some Ruddy Ducks, and a few
Lesser Scaup. Now, does anyone know where to find a Canvasback in Northern
Virginia?
