[va-bird] Common Goldeneye, and others, on the Potomac at Riverbend Park

Hello all,

We enjoyed an afternoon walk at Riverbend Park, Fairfax County, VA this
afternoon.

The quality of the finds made up for the low number of species. The waterfowl
activity was all down river from the Vistor Center.

Highlights included:
COMMON GOLDENEYE--one, loafing/sleeping on the Potomac down river from the
Visitor
Center. We saw it in the vicinity of the line of Bouys
LESSER SCAUP--one, same area as the Goldeneye
BUFFLEHEAD--between 75 and 100-the most we've seen on a visit to this park
RING-NECKED DUCK--probably 2-300. They were moving around quite a bit. Also,
another
birder with whom we talked noted hunter activity on the Maryland side
upriver from the
Visitor Center. That might have been one reason for their activity.
COMMON MERGANSER--a total of eight
AMERICAN COOT--two
AMERICAN BALD EAGLE--one, perched on a tree branch at the tip of the island
seen from
the trail near the the boundary of Riverbend and Great Falls NP

Also
EASTERN BLUEBIRDS--12, or so, that were feasting on the flies brought out by
the warmer
    weather
DOWNY WOODPECKER--a number of them

All in all, a nice afternoon for a walk
