After chickening out from going on a trip to Highland County where 70% chance
of snow was predicted, I decided to see what could be seen locally. Three of
us went to Chris Greene Lake Park north of the airport and found several
Redheads among the Canada Geese. We went south on Rt. 29 to Forest Lakes
(North) to a pond in that subdivision where there were Mallards, C. Geese,
several Hooded Mergansers and floating off by itself a gorgeous male Common
Goldeneye. Further south in Scottsville at a private farm pond there were more
Redheads. Finally, we traveled some back roads north of Scottsville and found
a Loggerhead Shrike on Blenheim Rd. This one had been spotted on the Warren
Count so we were on the lookout for it. It was teed up on a small tree right
along the road. We had long and great views.
